Uber says AI agents placed just four rides during Halloween week

Uber's first disclosure of agent-driven volume shows tiny numbers so far, a useful reality check for marketers planning around AI shopping assistants.

Key points

  • Uber said third-party AI agents placed four rides and about 500 Uber Eats orders during Halloween week, out of roughly 320 million trips and orders.
  • It was Uber's first disclosure of agent-driven volume, made on its third-quarter 2026 earnings call.
  • DoorDash said a week earlier it had received only a few hundred orders from AI agents so far.
  • Uber's CEO said the company will work with agent makers but expects its own app to stay the preferred route.

Why it matters for marketers: Agent-driven commerce is still tiny for large consumer platforms, so marketers should not shift budgets or channel plans yet, but should prepare for agents as a future discovery channel.

Uber disclosed on its third-quarter 2026 earnings call that third-party AI agents ordered only four rides during the week of Halloween, its busiest week in October. Agents also placed around 500 Uber Eats orders, against about 320 million total trips and orders across both services. It is the first time the company has shared this figure.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi called traction "very, very early and very limited," while saying Uber hopes for more. He said the company will work with outside AI firms, wants to avoid depending on any single player, and believes its own app offers the easiest experience. He noted that booking a ride in the app takes about 50 seconds on average and reordering a favorite meal about 90, so an agent may not save users time.

The numbers land amid heavy attention on personal agents. TechCrunch reported that Meta's Muse topped 10 million users, per Meta, and that many were using it to shop and transact with businesses. DoorDash said the week before that it had received only a few hundred agent orders. The Verge noted that platforms have little incentive to let agents take over the customer relationship, and Uber is building its own AI tools, such as a Cart Assistant for Uber Eats.

For marketers, the takeaway is calibration. Agent-led purchasing is a real channel to monitor, but current volume does not justify rebuilding funnels around it. Direct app and brand experiences still carry nearly all transactions. Watch whether Uber and DoorDash open more formal access for agents, and whether later quarterly disclosures show these counts moving beyond a rounding error.
