Key points
- Stripe's Link saw agent transactions grow 38-fold and payment volume 20-fold in September, per an Upstarts Media report, with no absolute figures disclosed.
- Agents on the service rose from about 70 at the time of the analysis to roughly 200 now, per Stripe's Dan Hill, including Meta's Muse and Grok Bot.
- Retail accounted for 36 percent of transactions and 32 percent of volume; travel took 28 percent of volume.
- Link gives agents a separate card number rather than the user's real one, and users can cap spending.
Why it matters for marketers: Agent-led buying is starting to show up in real payment data, so marketers should consider how products and offers appear to software shoppers, not only to people.
Stripe says AI agents are making more purchases for users through Link, its payment service, according to a report from Upstarts Media. In September, agent transactions rose 38-fold and payment volume rose 20-fold. Stripe has not shared the underlying counts or dollar amounts, and the report notes that the growth began from a small base.
Dan Hill, a Stripe executive, argues that the activity is now meaningful. He says the number of agents using Link climbed from about 70 when the analysis was run to roughly 200 today. Hill named Meta's Muse and Grok Bot among them. Retail led the mix, followed by travel, and Hill said some users have agents handle big-ticket items such as flights and furniture.
For marketers and content teams, the data hints at a shift in who the buyer is. If software agents increasingly pick and pay for products, product pages, pricing clarity, availability data and reviews may need to work for machines as well as people. Because the percentages come without absolute numbers, it is too early to size the channel.
On the safety side, Link hands agents a distinct card number instead of the user's actual one, and users can set limits. Anthropic and OpenAI also use Link, though not yet for agent purchases. Hill acknowledged that PayPal and Shopify's Shop Pay compete in this space and called the market very early. Watch for real volume figures and for which payment rails the large AI assistants end up adopting.
