Meta buys Conductor, a tool for running multiple coding agents at once

Meta has acquired the AI coding startup Conductor, and cloud users face a Nov. 20 shutdown, which matters to teams building on agent tooling.

Key points

  • Meta confirmed it bought Conductor, a startup that runs several coding agents side by side; no price was disclosed.
  • Conductor Cloud closes Nov. 20, and the startup says it will then purge cloud data, so users have a short window to export.
  • CEO Charlie Holtz promises "something new" by early next year; The Decoder says the desktop app stops getting new models in early 2027.
  • Conductor relies on agents from labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI rather than building its own.

Why it matters for marketers: Coding-agent tooling is consolidating under big platforms, so teams using third-party orchestration tools should check data exports, vendor dependence and roadmap risk before building workflows on them.

Meta has acquired Conductor, a startup founded in 2024 whose product lets software engineers run several AI coding agents in parallel workspaces. Axios reported the deal first. Meta confirmed it to TechCrunch but gave no further details, and no price has been made public.

Conductor does not build its own agents. It orchestrates ones from labs like Anthropic and OpenAI. CEO Charlie Holtz wrote that the company has "big, crazy plans for the next interface" and expects to release something new by early next year. Until then, he said, core features should keep working as they do now, with one exception: the cloud service closes on Nov. 20, and user cloud data will be deleted after that date.

The Decoder frames the deal as part of a pattern: because models are easy to swap, large AI companies are buying the tooling layer around them to keep developers on their own platforms. It points to Anthropic's purchase of Stainless in May and OpenAI's plan to acquire Pierre Computer on the same day as Meta's announcement. Meta launched its own coding agent, Muse Code, in August.

For marketers and content teams, the practical lesson is about dependency. Many teams now lean on small agent tools for site builds, automation and internal apps. When such a tool is absorbed by a larger company, features, pricing and support can shift. Anyone using Conductor Cloud should export their work before Nov. 20.

Watch for what Meta ships under the Conductor team in early 2027, and whether it stays open to agents from rival labs.
