HubSpot adds credit spending caps and mid-contract seat swaps for AI usage

HubSpot rolled out billing controls to help marketing and operations teams predict costs as AI features move to usage-based credits.

Key points

  • Account-level caps on HubSpot credits default to 50% above a customer's monthly allocation, and admins can change them to fit a set budget.
  • Customers can trade seats they are not using for credits, or change seat types during a contract term.
  • Teams can buy credits in monthly bundles or be billed only for what they use when demand jumps.
  • Hard limits on marketing-contact tiers stop automatic, unplanned upgrades as lists grow.

Why it matters for marketers: Marketers can test AI agents and automation with a ceiling on credit costs, and can shift budget between seats and credits without waiting for a contract renewal.

HubSpot announced new pricing and billing options on Thursday, aimed at giving marketing and operations teams more say over what they spend as AI features shift toward consumption-based pricing. The changes include account-level limits on credit spend, the option to convert idle seats into credits, and added ways to pay when usage runs past the monthly allotment.

By default, the new spending cap sits at 50% above a customer's monthly credit allocation. Administrators can move that number up or down to match a specific budget. Teams can also pick between buying credits in set monthly bundles or paying as they go when activity spikes. HubSpot is also adding hard limits on marketing-contact tiers, so a growing database does not trigger an upgrade nobody budgeted for.

The update follows a pricing overhaul for new EMEA customers announced two weeks earlier, which moved from product-based pricing to a model built on platform editions, seats and usage credits. The two announcements are separate, but both speak to the same concern: usage-based costs are harder to forecast than flat seat fees, especially for teams experimenting with automated workflows and AI agents.

For marketers, the practical gain is room to experiment. HubSpot Chief Customer Officer Jon Dick said nobody should miss out on AI because the bill is unknown. Operations leads can set a ceiling before rolling AI tools out to more people, and can move budget between seats and credits as team needs change.

Teams on HubSpot should review their default cap, decide whether it matches their budget, and check which seat types qualify for swaps. It is also worth watching how credit consumption tracks against allocation once more AI agents go live.
