Google launches Gemini 4 Argon with paid-only access and a temporary price cut

Google's new frontier model is live in the API, Gemini app and AI Mode, but access depends on subscription tier and API pricing is temporary.

Key points

  • Google released Gemini 4 Argon on its API, in the Gemini app and AI Mode for Pro and Ultra subscribers, and in Antigravity for Ultra only.
  • Introductory API price is $2 per million input and $10 per million output tokens; per Ars Technica, it doubles after November 30.
  • Google says Argon ranks #1 on the Vals Index, which covers finance, coding, legal and tax work.
  • Free users get no access, and Google has not said when Argon will reach other Antigravity tiers, according to Ars Technica.

Why it matters for marketers: Marketers get a new top-tier model for content and agent work, but access is paywalled and API costs will double after November 30, so budget before building.

Google has launched Gemini 4 Argon, its latest frontier model, after teasing it a few weeks ago and first limiting it to trusted cyber defenders. It is available through the API in AI Studio, in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search for Pro and Ultra subscribers, and in Antigravity for Ultra subscribers.

Google says the model leads the Vals Index and beats rival frontier models on benchmarks in coding, finance, law and science. It also says Argon follows style instructions better than earlier Gemini models, answers with less hedging and avoids repetition and cliches. Those are Google's claims, and The Verge notes the company is positioning the model against releases from OpenAI and Anthropic.

For marketing and content teams, the writing and style-following claims matter most, along with Google's example of Argon turning a folder of project context into a client proposal deck and setting up a workflow for future requests. Cost is the other factor. Ars Technica reports the $2 and $10 token rates run only through November 30, after which they rise to $4 and $20. The Verge cautions that cheaper per-token pricing does not always mean cheaper tasks, since models use different numbers of tokens.

Watch whether Google opens Argon to lower Antigravity tiers or free users, which it has not committed to. Before building production workflows on the API, test real token usage and model the post-November prices.
