CNN International holds to Q1 2027 target for its first agent-sold ad revenue

Seven months after announcing the plan, CNN International says agentic ad selling is on schedule, even as standards and accountability questions remain open.

Key points

  • CNN International still targets Q1 2027 for its first revenue from selling ads through AI agents, per digital operations VP Faisal Karmali.
  • Karmali said the network cannot yet trade through the agent, but is studying how a buy-side agent reads its properties.
  • He offered a wide range for agent-driven sales: perhaps 5% of the ad business at the start, potentially 50% eventually.
  • Open issues include two overlapping standards, guardrails against gaming, and who is liable when an agent misreads a brief.

Why it matters for marketers: Publishers and advertisers preparing for agent-to-agent buying face unsettled standards and accountability, so early revenue will depend on how well inventory data is readable by buyers' agents.

CNN International says its plan to sell advertising through AI agents remains on track for a first-quarter 2027 launch. Faisal Karmali, vp of digital operations for CNN International Commercial, gave the update at Digiday's Media Strategies event in London, saying he is still hopeful about having revenue flowing in that window.

The network is not yet trading through the agent. Karmali said the current work is about seeing how a buy-side agent evaluates CNN's properties. The build combines in-house infrastructure with outside technology partners, including demand-side platforms, and early use cases are expected to center on performance campaigns.

The obstacles are mostly industry-wide. Two competing standards overlap on 13 functions, buyers are building their own systems in parallel, and there is no agreed method to stop agents from gaming the system. Open questions also include how a buyer's agent confirms a seller's agent is authorized, and who is responsible if an agent misreads a brief and spends anyway.

For marketers, the point is that a buyer's agent sees only how inventory is described, not the sales team behind it. Karmali argued that CNN's human-made, fact-checked content and clean metadata give it an advantage. Ravi Patel, CEO of ad tech startup SWYM, cautioned that seller agents automate deals but not delivery, which is decided impression by impression.

Karmali would not say whether agents shift power toward publishers, calling it too early. Watch for whether the standards converge and whether CNN's first agent-sold campaigns appear on schedule next year.
