Key points
- Axios announced Axios Direct at the Digiday Publishing Summit in September: structured feeds built for AI agents, resembling RSS more than articles.
- The first feed, for Axios Pro Deals subscribers' agents covering M&A, launched this fall; a feed to train in-house LLMs follows next year.
- A third, consumer-facing feed is planned for next year, sending Axios reporting directly to individual subscribers' agents.
- Every embeds copy-paste prompts and 'Read With Claude' or 'Read With ChatGPT' buttons, and offers an 8,000-word Codex piece agents can reshape.
Why it matters for marketers: Content teams may soon need to publish for agents as well as people, and the revenue model for that audience is still unproven.
Publishers are starting to treat AI agents as readers in their own right, according to Wired. Axios announced Axios Direct, a set of feeds that strip out narrative in favor of structured data, closer to a Bloomberg terminal than a series of articles. The first feed is live for Axios Pro Deals subscribers, and two more, one for training in-house models and one for consumers, are planned for next year.
Every is taking a different route. Founder Dan Shipper says its writers include prompts that readers can paste into an AI tool, and some guides carry buttons that open Claude or ChatGPT with a summary prompt. Its long Codex article sits on top of a database of reporting, so a subscriber's agent can build a custom article, podcast or video from it.
For marketers and content teams, the shift touches how content is structured and who it is written for. Axios executives say its short, highly structured style already makes it a favorite for AI to pull from. That suggests format, not only keywords, may influence whether content gets surfaced by agents.
The money question is open. Rasmus Kleis Nielsen of the University of Copenhagen calls the market for publishing to agents "emerging" and uneven, with unresolved questions about pricing. He also notes that brand visibility inside AI answers can still have value, much like social posts that rarely drive site visits.
Worth watching: whether the consumer-facing Axios Direct feed arrives next year, and whether paid subscriptions that include a reader's agent, as Every's does, become a common model. Teams can start by auditing whether their content is structured clearly enough for an agent to find the main point quickly.
