1Password adds sign-in approvals so AI agents never see your passwords

A new 1Password feature lets agents log into accounts for users after approval, which matters for teams handing browser-based work to AI.

Key points

  • 1Password for Agents lets an AI agent sign into accounts after user approval, with 1Password filling the login so the agent never sees the password.
  • Each agent proves its identity with a unique digital key, and approval happens on the user's own device, similar to two-factor authentication.
  • Launch support covers five agents, among them Claude Duet and Town; nine more partners, such as Perplexity, Ramp and Browserbase, are working on support.

Why it matters for marketers: Agents that log into ad platforms, CMS tools and analytics can now work without marketers pasting in credentials, which lowers a major security risk of delegating tasks.

1Password has introduced 1Password for Agents, a feature that lets AI agents sign into accounts without ever viewing or handling the password. Users still approve each sign-in request, so the agent does not get open-ended access to connected accounts.

The flow works like this: when an agent reaches a login form, it identifies itself to 1Password with a unique digital key. The app then notifies the user which credentials are needed and why. If the user approves on their own device, 1Password fills in the login itself and the agent carries on with its task.

1Password chief product officer Aashish Tripathi said the old habit of handing over a credential and hoping for the best no longer fits, since agents are starting to do real work. He described 1Password as the trust layer for personal agent experiences.

For marketers and content teams, the practical gain is in delegating routine tasks that sit behind logins, such as checking dashboards, updating publishing tools or pulling reports. Keeping passwords away from the agent reduces the exposure that comes with sharing credentials, while the approval step keeps a person in charge.

The feature is built to work with several popular agents at launch, and 1Password says more partners, including Perplexity, Ramp and Browserbase, are working on support, with additional integrations to come. Teams should check whether the agents they use are on the list, and decide who approves requests for shared business accounts.
