This comparison is for content leads, marketers, agency teams and founders who use an AI assistant to draft and edit long-form articles. You probably care less about a single clever answer and more about whether a tool can hold a brand voice, work with your source files, and make fact-checking manageable.

We looked at ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini across eight areas: the drafting and editing surface, brand voice setup, source material connections, fact handling, research depth, collaboration, memory controls and model availability.

These products change quickly. Everything below reflects vendor documentation at the time of writing, so confirm current features in each product before you build a workflow around them.

The short answer

  • ChatGPT: a good fit for teams that want shared Projects with project-specific instructions, plus Pages for drafting and commenting, and that already keep source files in Google Drive, Box, Dropbox or SharePoint.
  • Claude: a good fit for teams that want to write living documents with the AI and colleagues in the same doc, with changes attributed to each person, and that value project knowledge bases.
  • Gemini: a good fit for teams that work in Google Workspace, want reusable skills for voice and formatting, and rely on Deep Research that can combine Google Search with their own Drive and Gmail content.
  • For any of them: plan for human fact-checking. OpenAI documents that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, and Anthropic documents that Claude can produce incorrect or misleading responses. The Gemini documentation we reviewed did not include a comparable warning, so apply the same editorial checks.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant. According to its release notes, it now runs on the GPT-6 model family and includes Projects, web search with citations, Library and Pages.

Where it is strong

According to OpenAI's help pages, Projects keep related chats, files and instructions together. OpenAI lists writing and recurring content drafts among the intended uses. Project instructions apply only inside that project and override global custom instructions, so a team can set a voice for one body of work. Projects can be shared, and OpenAI's help page describes using project-specific instructions to keep tone and style consistent across contributors.

For source material, projects accept uploaded files and pasted text, and can link to Google Drive and Slack. According to the release notes, Library has added Box, Dropbox and SharePoint alongside Google Drive, and users can follow citations back to the source file.

For editing, Pages lets you turn a conversation into a Page, start from a template or write directly in Space. You can edit it yourself or ask ChatGPT to revise it, and collaborators can co-edit and comment. According to the release notes, text pasted on the web from Google Docs keeps its headings, bold text, links and lists.

Things to consider

  • Canvas was removed from some models in May 2026, and writing now happens through writing blocks in chat. The Projects help page still mentions Canvas, so confirm what is available to you.
  • OpenAI warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, and advises opening cited sources.
  • Output format behavior differs by model. The Pro reasoning option does not support Intelligent UI.
  • Information added to a shared Page is visible to everyone who can view it.
  • Chats created with a GPT cannot be moved into a project, and the number of project files depends on plan.

Who it fits

Teams that want shared, instruction-driven projects and a document-style drafting space with comments, and that keep source files across several storage tools.

Claude

Claude is Anthropic's assistant. Its documentation describes the Claude 5.5 model family, Projects, memory, web search with citations, and Artifacts, including the newer Claude Docs for collaborative writing.

Where it is strong

Claude Docs is built for writing living documents with Claude and colleagues. According to the help article, Claude drafts in front of you, asks clarifying questions up front and leaves comments explaining its choices. It starts from context Claude already has, such as files, memory, projects, skills and connected apps. People with edit access can work in the same doc at the same time, and every change is attributed to whoever made it.

Projects combine a knowledge base of uploaded documents with instructions that apply to all chats in the project. According to Anthropic's documentation, on paid plans Claude automatically enables RAG mode when project knowledge approaches the context window limit. On Team and Enterprise, projects can be shared at view or edit levels.

On fact handling, according to Anthropic, when web search is used Claude grounds responses in live web content and includes citations, source links and relevant quotes where appropriate. Memory is shown as editable Topics, which gives editors a way to see what Claude has retained.

Things to consider

  • Anthropic says Claude can produce incorrect or misleading responses, including quotes that look authoritative but are not grounded in fact. Editors should verify quotations and claims.
  • Web search is a toggle, so cited answers depend on it being on.
  • Context is not shared across chats in a project unless it is added to the project knowledge base.
  • Project sharing is documented for Team and Enterprise only, and admins can turn it off.
  • Anthropic's release notes described Claude Design, Slides and Docs on Enterprise as beta and off by default until an owner enables them, while the Claude Docs guide says Docs turns on by default for Enterprise on October 15, 2026. Confirm the current status for your plan.
  • Independent coverage of Styles tone presets is inconsistent. Check the current Settings UI before building a voice workflow around Styles.

Who it fits

Teams that want to co-write in a shared document with the AI and keep a curated knowledge base per project, and that build quote and claim verification into their editing process.

Gemini

Gemini is Google's assistant. Its release notes describe Gemini 4 Argon as the newest model, along with Skills (replacing Gems), Canvas, Deep Research and Google Workspace connections.

Where it is strong

According to Google's release notes, skills are reusable instructions that tell Gemini how to handle specific tasks. Gemini can build custom skills from your chats, and multiple skills can be stacked, for example a writing-style skill with a brand-guidelines skill. The Customize menu also connects more than 40 apps or services.

Deep Research uses Google Search as its default source, and you can add sources such as Gmail or Drive, upload files and add NotebookLM notebooks. Google positions it for in-depth, real-time research. In the API, Gemini 4 Argon supports a unified 1,048,576-token window shared by input, thinking and output, which may be relevant if you work with very large source sets.

Canvas has a Create menu that can transform text into web pages, infographics, quizzes and Audio Overviews, according to notes dated May 2025.

Things to consider

  • Google says skills will replace Gems, and existing Gems will be migrated automatically. Teams building voice setups should plan for that change. Skills are currently available to users 18 and over, with more users coming soon.
  • Gemini 4 Argon is rolling out in the app to Pro and Ultra subscribers, not all tiers.
  • Deep Research visuals and animations are not available when Workspace services such as Gmail and Drive are included as sources. Daily and concurrent request limits apply.
  • Past Deep Research reports can only be found if Keep Activity is on, and adding Drive files to a Gem requires Keep Activity and Workspace connected to Gemini Apps.
  • Most connected apps in Customize are available in English in the U.S., with select apps in a few other regions.
  • The documentation we reviewed does not describe a shared co-editing document surface comparable to Pages or Claude Docs.

Who it fits

Teams that live in Google Workspace, want to save voice and formatting rules once as skills, and need research that mixes web results with their own Drive and Gmail content.

How to choose

  • Where does your team draft and edit? If you want a shared document with comments inside the assistant, compare Pages and Claude Docs side by side with a real article.
  • How will you encode your brand voice? Test project instructions, skills and instructions on the same style guide and see which output needs the least rework. Check the current settings, since Gems, Styles and ChatGPT's Canvas have all seen changes or inconsistent documentation.
  • Where do your source files live? Match the tool to Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, SharePoint, Slack or Microsoft 365, and check whether admin consent or regional limits apply.
  • Who verifies facts? OpenAI and Anthropic both document that outputs can be wrong or incomplete, and editorial checks make sense with any tool. Decide who opens the cited sources and checks quotations before anything is published.
  • How much research depth do you need? If articles depend on long reports, compare Deep Research and large context against simply uploading source documents to a project.
  • What do admins need to control? Review sharing, memory defaults and beta features for your plan, since these differ by vendor and plan.
  • What will it cost? Check their current pricing, and confirm which model and features your plan includes.
