This comparison is for content marketers, content leads, agency teams and founders who write a lot and are deciding which general-purpose AI assistant to build their workflow around. Both ChatGPT and Claude can draft, edit and research. The differences show up in how each handles persistent context, in-product editing, source control and team setup.
We looked at long-form drafting, brand voice, research, editing and team use. We kept to what each vendor documents publicly, and we flag where the documentation does not say. Features in this category change quickly, so check the vendor pages before you commit.
The short answer
- Choose ChatGPT if your team wants shared projects with project-level tone instructions, deep research with explicit control over which sites are used, and a documented Word add-in.
- Choose Claude if you want to draft living documents with teammates in Claude Docs (currently in beta), work with a knowledge base per project, and produce .docx, .pptx and .xlsx files in conversation.
- Choose either for cited research and for team workspaces with admin controls. According to their documentation, both cap their team plans at a set seat count and point larger organizations to Enterprise.
- Test both with one real brief, one style guide and one research question before you standardize. Your own content will tell you more than any feature list.

ChatGPT
ChatGPT is OpenAI's conversational assistant. At the time of writing it combines Chat, an agent-style Work mode and Codex, along with Projects, deep research and team workspaces (Business, Enterprise and Edu). Its home is chatgpt.com.
Where it is strong
Projects are a central part of its content workflow. According to OpenAI's Projects help page, a project keeps related chats, files and instructions together, and project instructions override a user's global custom instructions. OpenAI names content creation as a shared-project use case where those instructions keep tone and style consistent across contributors. According to the release notes, the custom instructions limit was raised to 5,000 characters on July 15, 2026 for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users, which gives more room for a style guide.
Several editing tools are documented. Canvas supports inline feedback and shortcuts such as suggest edits, adjust length, change reading level and final polish, per its launch description. A Word add-in (Sept 17, 2026) lets writers draft from notes, revise selected text and adjust headings from the sidebar, and it is listed as available on all plans. Pages (Sept 29, 2026) let collaborators work on the same Page and comment, each using their own ChatGPT; Space is available to eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise users.
Research includes source controls. Deep research lets you edit a proposed plan first, restrict or prioritize specific domains, and search uploaded files and supported connected apps. Reports carry citations or source links and can be downloaded as Markdown, Word or PDF.
Things to consider
- Chats in a shared project can be branched but not edited by several people at the same time.
- ChatGPT Work is not available in projects that use project-only memory, and shared projects are always project-only.
- The Google Drive app does not sync when added within a project. It can still search and access files.
- OpenAI plans to retire custom GPTs and migrate them to plugins. Teams using custom GPTs as brand-voice assistants should check the timing that applies to them.
- Pasting more than 10k characters is converted to an attachment automatically, though this can be switched back to text.
- Deep research usage and country availability vary by plan, and OpenAI notes standard chat may be faster for quick lookups.
- A Business workspace is capped at 200 paid seats for subscriptions created from Aug 24, 2026. Larger organizations are pointed to Enterprise.
Who it fits
Based on how OpenAI positions it, ChatGPT may suit teams that want a shared project as a live context hub for recurring content work, writers who work in Word, and researchers who want to choose which sites a report draws on. ChatGPT Business is described as a self-serve workspace with centralized admin and billing.
Claude
Claude is Anthropic's assistant, available on web, desktop and mobile. According to its documentation it offers Projects, Research, Artifacts including Claude Docs, Slides and Design, Cowork-style agentic tasks, and Team and Enterprise plans. Its home is claude.ai.
Where it is strong
Claude Docs is its main drafting feature. Per its help page, Claude drafts in front of you, asks clarifying questions up front, and leaves comments explaining its choices. You can edit the doc yourself, ask for another pass and share it by link. Anthropic positions it for work you will put in front of others, such as specs, briefs and status reports.
Context is built around Projects, which hold a knowledge base of uploaded files plus per-project instructions. Memory works as categorized entries listed under Topics in Settings, where items can be edited or deleted.
File handling is documented in detail. Claude can create and edit Excel, PowerPoint, Word and PDF files in conversation, with a 30MB maximum per file for uploads and downloads, and files can be saved directly to Google Drive. The Team plan lists connectors for Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Microsoft 365 and Slack, plus SSO, role-based permissioning and spend controls.
Research runs multiple searches that build on each other and returns cited answers. It can also search connected sources such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs.
Things to consider
- Claude Design, Slides and Docs are labeled beta. On Enterprise plans they stay off until an owner enables them.
- Research needs a paid plan and web search turned on. On Team and Enterprise, if an admin disables both Opus 5.5 and Opus 4.8 for a role, Research will not work for that role.
- Memory is off by default for Team and Enterprise, so shared preferences are not remembered unless it is enabled.
- The merged Cowork-and-chat experience is rolling out to Pro and Max first, so Team availability may lag.
- Usage limits include a five-hour session limit and weekly limits. Anthropic notes that Research and projects running several threads at once use allowance faster.
- Team plans are capped at 150 seats, with larger organizations directed to Enterprise.
- The Office add-in notes we reviewed cover Excel and PowerPoint. We did not find a Word add-in, so writers who work in Word may want to verify this.
Who it fits
Based on how Anthropic positions it, Claude may suit teams that want to write and revise documents together with the assistant, keep a knowledge base per project, and produce office files in conversation. Anthropic describes the Team plan as including projects, knowledge bases, collaboration features and centralized admin.
How to choose
- Where do your writers draft? If the answer is Word, ChatGPT documents an add-in. If it is a shared document with comments, look closely at Claude Docs and ChatGPT Pages.
- How will you store brand voice? Compare project instructions, the instruction character limit, uploaded style guides and memory settings. Check who controls memory defaults in your workspace.
- How much source control do you need? If you want to restrict research to named domains, review ChatGPT deep research. If you want searches across connected internal tools, review Claude Research.
- Who collaborates, and how? Check whether people need to edit the same chat at once, comment on drafts or only share context.
- What tools do you already use? Match connectors to your stack: Drive, Slack, Microsoft 365 or Gmail.
- What are your admin and data requirements? Ask your security lead to read each vendor's current data handling terms, since the sources we reviewed do not cover them equally.
- How heavy will usage be? Anthropic notes that Research and multi-thread projects use Claude allowance faster, and ChatGPT deep research usage varies by plan. Check their current pricing and limits for your plan.
- How tolerant are you of beta and recent features? Claude Docs is labeled beta and ChatGPT Pages is a recent release, so details may change.
