This comparison is for marketers, content leads, small agencies and founders who run social media with a team of one to ten people. You want help writing captions, a calendar you can trust, a way to get posts approved, and analytics that tell you what to do next.

We looked at five tools: Buffer, Hootsuite, Later, Sprout Social and Metricool. For each one we checked AI caption help, scheduling tools, approval depth, team roles, analytics, AI agent connections and network coverage. We also noted which features sit behind specific plans, because that is where small teams are most often surprised.

Features change often, and some vendor pages disagree with each other. Where that happens, we say so and suggest you confirm in the product.

The short answer

  • Buffer: generally a good fit for creators, small businesses and small teams that want a simple workspace with an AI Assistant and lightweight approvals.
  • Hootsuite: generally suits teams managing multiple accounts end to end who want layered approvals, bulk scheduling and an AI agent (Wisdom) in one suite.
  • Later: a fit for visual-first brands that want a drag-and-drop planner and no-login preview links for stakeholders.
  • Sprout Social: typically suits teams that want publishing, engagement, listening and analytics together, and that need multi-step approvals with external reviewers.
  • Metricool: a fit for freelancers, small brands and agencies that want planning, analytics and reporting in one place, including paid and website data.

Buffer

Buffer is a social media workspace for publishing, creating, engaging and analyzing posts across 10+ networks. It includes a built-in AI Assistant and lightweight team approvals.

Where it is strong

  • The AI Assistant sits in the Publishing composer and the Create space. According to its help article, you can regenerate, rephrase, shorten or expand output and shift the tone to more casual or more formal.
  • In the composer, the assistant is channel-aware. For Instagram, for example, it keeps a post under the 2,200-character limit.
  • Buffer's AI page lists idea generation, repurposing one post into platform-specific versions, and editing for tone, length or structure.
  • The Insights page offers plain-language Weekly Takeaways, with suggested actions such as revising the posting schedule or reposting engaging content. You can view all channels together or drill into one.
  • Buffer says you can connect it to Claude or ChatGPT through MCP to pull performance data, plan content and send posts to your queue from a chat.
  • According to its help center, team members with the Needs Approval role can only edit, delete and request approval on their own drafts. Their posts are always saved as drafts awaiting approval, including those made through the mobile apps, the API, the MCP server or third-party apps.

Things to consider

  • The help article says the AI Assistant is available on Buffer's newest plans, so check that your plan includes it.
  • Buffer says the assistant can produce inaccurate or fabricated information, has no real-time knowledge and cannot read URLs. It recommends reviewing and fact-checking all output.
  • Drafts are available on all plans, but approving drafts is only available on the Team plan, according to its help center.
  • Account owners and Full Access users do not get a Request Approval option for their own drafts. Buffer points to a separate agency workaround.
  • Kontentino, a competing vendor, describes Buffer's approval as a single stage with no multi-stage chain or deadline tracking. That is a competitor's view, not Buffer's documentation.
  • Buffer's help article names both GPT-5-mini and GPT-4.0 as the underlying model in different places, so the documentation is not fully consistent.

Who it fits

Buffer lists creators, small businesses, agencies, nonprofits, higher education and developers as audiences it is made for. It generally fits creators, small businesses and small teams that want a straightforward workspace and a review step before posts go live. Teams that need multi-stage sign-off may want to confirm that Buffer's approval options meet their needs, since a competitor describes them as single-stage.

Hootsuite

Hootsuite is a social media management suite. Since June 2026, its core publishing and planning product is called Perch, inside a broader Social OS with an AI agent named Wisdom.

Where it is strong

  • According to its publishing page, Wisdom can generate posts and on-brand images for any network, remix past posts and turn images into posts. The page also lists automated captions and hashtags and a built-in ideas engine.
  • According to its scheduler page, it shows best-time-to-post recommendations and heat maps, and can schedule content to go live at those times.
  • Perch's bulk scheduler can schedule up to 350 posts at once, and scheduled posts can be suspended in a crisis, according to Hootsuite.
  • The composer includes Canva and Adobe Express templates, free stock images and a hashtag generator.
  • According to its approval-tool page, Super Admins can designate up to three layers of approvals. Approvals can apply to posts, messages and comment replies. With multiple steps, a post does not move on until the previous approval is granted.
  • The Professional plan page lists Perch Analytics with customizable reports, competitive benchmarking for up to 20 competitors, report exports and scheduled reporting.
  • Hootsuite says Perch works inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot, and its June 2026 announcement added MCP connectors for Perch, Nest and Lumen.

Things to consider

  • Custom approval flows are plan-gated. The current help article lists the Advanced and Enterprise plans, while an older article refers to Business and Enterprise, so confirm the current plan name.
  • The 2026 rebrand renamed products. Older reviews and tutorials that mention OwlyWriter, OwlyGPT or Hootsuite Inbox describe what Hootsuite now calls Wisdom, Perch and Nest.
  • Social OS is a multi-product suite. Some capabilities, such as Lumen's social listening, sit in separate apps from publishing.
  • In the custom approval flow, when a requester asks a designated approver again, that approver is skipped on the second pass, and the skipped review is not reflected in the approval history, according to the help center.

Who it fits

Hootsuite's own workflow guide describes it as best for teams managing multiple accounts end to end. It generally suits teams that want layered approvals, bulk scheduling and reporting in one suite. Because it is a multi-product suite, consider whether you want that breadth.

Later

Later is a visual-first scheduler built around a drag-and-drop planner, with an AI Caption Writer, Link in Bio and analytics. Later was the thinnest vendor in our research, and we could not review its help center or product pages. Treat the details below as vendor claims or independent reports and verify them directly.

Where it is strong

  • The Visual Planner previews your feed before posting, and the AI Caption Writer generates captions when you are stuck, according to Later.
  • An independent directory says the caption tool produces up to three options per post and is trained on a brand's previous posts for tone matching.
  • Saved Captions stores hashtag and keyword lists organized by topic and platform, and a separate Hashtag Suggestions tool sources new hashtags, according to Later.
  • Later says it gives separate best-time-to-post recommendations for Instagram Reels, feed posts and Stories.
  • Later says Future Trends surfaces emerging trend data in the calendar and auto-drafts posts timed to those trends.
  • The Share Calendar creates a single link showing a feed preview and scheduled posts. Later says it needs no logins or training and positions it for stakeholder approval.
  • An independent review says team members can share planning by assigning posts to a specific user.

Things to consider

  • Later's own blog pages give different platform counts, seven in one and eight in the other. Confirm the current network list in the product.
  • The documentation we reviewed describes approvals as a no-login preview link. It did not describe multi-step approval chains or role-based approval, so verify these in Later's help center before choosing it for formal sign-off.
  • An independent directory describes Later as two products sharing a brand: Later Social, the scheduler, and Later Influence, an enterprise influencer platform. Check which one a plan includes.
  • We did not find AI agent or MCP details for Later in our research.

Who it fits

Later positions itself as visual-first scheduling that needs no enterprise budget. It generally fits brands that plan around how the feed looks, and teams whose approvers mainly need to view a preview link.

Sprout Social

Sprout Social is a social media management and social intelligence platform covering publishing, a Smart Inbox, listening and analytics, with AI Assist features and an AI agent called Trellis.

Where it is strong

  • Enhance by AI Assist in Compose generates options for post text and tone. Sprout's case study says it helps with ideas, captions and hashtags, and can suggest multiple captions in different tones.
  • Other AI Assist features include alt text generation for post images, conversation summaries, and listening keyword and topic insights.
  • According to Sprout, approval workflows support multiple steps and users, external approvers such as clients outside your organization, and reply approvals for customer-service messages.
  • Approval alerts include a daily digest of posts needing review in the next 24 hours, hourly reminders and a heads-up to authors if a post misses its approval window.
  • The Publishing calendar shows content by day, week and month, including what still needs approval.
  • Sprout offers hashtag analytics, including a report of the most used and most engaged outbound hashtags for Instagram Business Profiles.
  • Sprout lists a ChatGPT MCP connection that unlocks insights from publishing data.

Things to consider

  • The AI features are built on an OpenAI integration, and Sprout's help center lists which inputs are processed by OpenAI for each feature. Review that table if data handling matters to your team.
  • Some AI features are plan-specific. The Smart Inbox tone feature, for example, is documented as Advanced-plan only and requires enabling the OpenAI integration.
  • An independent agency-focused evaluation from September 2026 says Sprout is licensed per seat, that reviewers who need a login count as seats, and that its white-labeling is limited compared with agency-built tools. It also says Sprout is oriented toward enterprise teams. Weigh that against your team size.

Who it fits

Sprout positions itself as a platform for teams that want publishing, engagement, listening and analytics in one place, and it generally suits those teams. One independent review recommends it over Hootsuite for teams that rely heavily on analytics and social listening, which is the reviewer's view rather than Sprout's.

Metricool

Metricool is a planning, analytics and reporting platform that combines organic content, paid ads and website analytics, with AI text, scheduling and reporting tools.

Where it is strong

  • The AI text generator drafts post text from your input, and you review and adjust it before scheduling. It is available in the calendar and in autolists.
  • Metricool lists custom AI tone settings, hashtags, post variations, and automatic alt text.
  • Posts can be batch-scheduled by importing a CSV. Autolists can recycle evergreen content. Manual calendar scheduling has no limit on how far ahead you plan, according to its documentation, while recurring scheduling tops out at 180 days and AI-generated scheduling at 90 days.
  • AI scheduling, launched in October 2025, can post the same content across multiple brands from one prompt, set a posting frequency and adjust for each brand's time zone.
  • When sending a post for review, you choose the criteria: no reviewer, at least one reviewer, or all reviewers. If one reviewer rejects, the post is not published. Reviewers added by email do not need a Metricool account.
  • Metricool Studio lets you build reports by typing a request and includes AI-written summaries of what changed.
  • Metricool says it offers an official MCP connector for Claude and also works with ChatGPT, for querying analytics and scheduling or editing posts.

Things to consider

  • Approvals, roles and permissions, and team-member access require the Advanced plan or higher. Starter does not include them.
  • AI scheduling is documented as an Advanced-plan feature, and AI credits are metered per brand per month. Check how many your plan includes.
  • Reviewers added by email receive an individual email for each post, so consider how many posts you will send for review.
  • Planable, a competing vendor, argues that Metricool's approval and notification mechanics and its analytics-history limits are weaker for multi-client agency workflows. That is a competitor's assessment, not Metricool's documentation.

Who it fits

Metricool's own comparison page says it suits creators, freelancers managing multiple clients, small brands that want organic and paid visibility, and agencies that need approval workflows and structured reporting. It generally fits small teams that care as much about reporting as about scheduling.

How to choose

  • How formal is your sign-off? If one reviewer is enough, Buffer or Metricool may do. If you need several steps or outside clients in the loop, look closely at Hootsuite and Sprout Social. For a quick visual check, Later's share link may be enough.
  • Who needs to log in? Count reviewers, clients and part-time contributors. Some tools license by seat, and some approval features sit on higher plans.
  • How much do you rely on AI drafting? Compare tone controls, per-network adaptation and alt text. Plan to fact-check any AI output, as Buffer's own documentation advises.
  • Do you want to work from a chat assistant? Buffer, Hootsuite, Sprout Social and Metricool each describe a connection to Claude or ChatGPT. Hootsuite also lists Gemini and Copilot. Confirm that your plan includes it.
  • What do you report on? Decide whether you need competitor benchmarking, hashtag reports, paid and website data, or simple weekly suggestions.
  • Which networks do you publish to? Confirm the current list in the product, especially where vendor pages disagree.
  • Which plan includes what you need? Approvals, AI features and team access are often gated. Check their current pricing.
